"We were expecting Haight-Ashbury to be special, a creative and artistic place, filled with Beautiful People, but it was horrible – full of ghastly drop-outs, bums and spotty youths, all out of their brains. At the time, Haight-Ashbury was the LSD capital of America and was the home to such musicians as Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. After spending 6 days in Los Angeles, Harrison and his wife Pattie flew in a private jet up to San Francisco to visit his wife's sister and to see what the deal was with all these American hippies. ![]() ![]() George Harrison once said when he visited Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco during the "Summer of Love" in 1967 - it was a defining moment when he knew the hippie movement was over.
